The Knife, in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, are to release the studio version of the opera 'Tomorrow, In A Year', on the 1st March 2010. Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book 'On the Origin of the Species', The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme.
Esther Ramirez also known as Essimar on Etsy is the queen of paper. The photos below is an example of how well she masters this. The technique reminded me of the most recent lecture at LCC by Simon Costin on British folklore and folk narratives.
Nexus Productions celebrated their 10 year anniversary with a retrospective show reel screened at the ICA. It was great to see all their work, going back the the beginning of year 2000, before AfterEffects was even an option. Smith & Foulkes' Honda commercial named 'Grrr', awarded 'Commercial of the decade', was of course also screened. Click here to watch the cute film if you haven't already watched it on your tele and click here to read why they won the title! The screening was followed by a Q&A session with Chris O'Reilly and directors Smith & Foulkes. They actually talked about the importance of story telling, visual narratives, ideas and concepts to be the essence of all work. Interesting point in relation to the new LCC brief on 'Folklore'... It is all about having a good story to tell! Of course they also did quite a bit of talking on the making and production of the Oscar-nominated shortfilm below. A great and inspiring evening followed by vast red-wine consummations!
Anne-Sophie is back in London! My suitcase however is not with me. It never showed up at the airport. Luckily I made it into the flat and into the warm warm warmest of beds. Tomorrow I will start sketchbooking for the project...
In my search for H.C. Andersen fairytale-like-stuff I ran into this beautiful work by the artist Laura McKellar. She creates embroideries on fabric with digital prints, which results in a tactile effect without looking mismatched. These pieces are from the 'Once Upon' exhibition and based on the story of the ugly duckling. Watch and learn kids!
Awesome paper crafting going on here by the graphic designer Miya Saito and bookbinder Michele Chun. Each page becomes a sculptural artifact in a rigid 3D form when you flip the pages. Please notice the pink nails in the photos! Even more awesome. To see more porn and pink nails click here. It reminds me of this origami book I have at home on my shelf called 'Pornogami' where you can learn to fold paper and dollars into little naughty mini artworks. But don't be fooled - they are very difficult to make!! And for adults only of course..
Happy New Year!! I celebrated mine with a bunch of kings & queens till early early morning meaning 2010 started off with 'sleep dept'. Anyways, hopefully this year is going to be full of crazy trips like this one and many other intriguing encounters... I'm excited!
